UV Mapping

Today I tried to UV map my ship but it wasn’t successful in any way. I have learnt how to do it but I am having a lot of trouble putting it onto my ship because of all the complex shapes and angles. I really want to be able to use UV mapping but it will take a lot of time out of college. I will definitely be practicing over the weekend and I will keep the blog updated.

My First Pieces of Art

Today I worked on face drawing with Tony and I believe that I have improved my drawing skills a lot in just one 2 hour session. I have drawn a 3/4 and a front facing face which both started out very bad but ended up turning out quite good in my opinion.

Game Update

After all the work that I did at home I have found out today that I have to start again because I was using a different version of Unity. However in the space of 2 hours I have managed to make my whole game again. I am quite surprised that I have done what took me 4 days in the space of 2 hours. This experience has allowed me to further my knowledge in both Photoshop and Unity while also showing that, in the future, I should check before doing it all at home. My level 3 is not quite done yet but I will update my blog when it is.

Modelling

Today I started work on Maya creating 3D models and messing around with all the settings to get used to the simple stuff. As a test i started on what which seems to be a monument type of design and after that I started work on a space ship as a mini project that I was told to begin with.

I have learnt a lot of stuff in Maya today because before I started anything today all I had used previously was 3DS Max. After using both Maya and Max I have noticed the major difference between the two, for example: Maya is much easier.

Improvements

Today I started some improvements to my assets at home to make them as good as possible to be put in my game. As you can most likely deduce from the assets above i am going for a factory vibe for my game with the metal walls, radioactive signs, factory chimneys (which the player will control) and enemies in hazmat suits with blood on them for that extra confirmation that they are bad. I am looking forward to being able to put these assets into testing when i put them in my game.

An Introduction

This is the post excerpt.

35902462-steampunk-wallpaperHello,

My name is Matthew Dickson and I have recently joined Sunderland College to take the Next Gen course. I am interested in entering the games industry in the form of a programmer. Throughout my time at the college I will be posting all of my work on this site including other aspects other than programming like 2D/3D design, animation and art.

My favourite game of all time is probably Spyro: A Heroes Tale because it was and still is a really fun and interesting game to play through and personally I am a gamer who often enjoys a spot of nostalgia now and then. However, moving away from nostalgic games, my modern day favourite game is currently PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds because of its amazing graphics while just being made and inspired by one person, another reason i like it is because of how often new things are added to the game and how responsive the developer is when there is something wrong with it.  I am very interested in games that are breath-taking to anybody that plays them graphics-wise like the Uncharted franchise and Horizon Zero Dawn. I am also very interested in the Steampunk theme, which explains my interest in Bioshock Infinite.

I fully acknowledge the fact that the Next Gen course will be a challenge to get used to at first but i am looking forward to being able to call the hard work my own and eventually be able to get my life long dream job. You will all be joining me over the next 2 years as i go through this course and update you every step of the way so keep updated.
